House of Mexico News

April 13, 2008
Dear HOM Members & Friends:

Earlier this year we had our Installation Dinner. We were honored to have had representatives from the Mexican Consulate as our special guests. In addition, all attendees were treated to a wonderful display of artistic photo images of scenes from Mexico taken by Memo Cavado. Music was provided by “Gibrann” and “David Cain”. Both individuals are very talented musicians and vocalists.

During this first quarter of the year, the HOM hosted the Lawn Program on March 9th in Balboa Park. Food and beverages were sold and entertainment was provided. Providing the entertainment were two folklorico groups, Tierra Caliente and Corazon Purepeche. Both groups have been very supportive of HOM activities and events. In addition, HOM’s Queen and Princess did a traditional dance. The event took place in the lawn area surround by the International Cottages and was very well attended.

On April 26, 2008 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at Chuey’s Restaurant and Cantina, HOM will be hosting its Annual “Arte, Color & Fiesta” fund raiser. There will be an exhibition of art work by artist from both the US and Mexico, entertainment, food and Beverages, both a silent and live auction. The entry cost is a $25.00 donation. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door on the day of the event. Members are encouraged to attend. Please invite your friends, neighbors, and fellow co-workers. It should be an exciting event.

We encourage members to assist by volunteering for this event. Volunteers should contact Eunice Munroe at munroeunice@hotmail.com or Omar Lopez at omar.lopez@cox.net.

Another event that is coming up is the Annual Ethnic Food Fair for all the International Cottages in Balboa Park. This event will occur on Sunday, May 26, 2008 from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The HOM will be a participant and will be selling Mexican food. The event is a great opportunity to sample the cuisine from other countries. Please invite your friends and family to this event. There will be entertainment featuring dances and music from a number of different countries. It is a great way to spend the day in Balboa Park.

This year HOM’s Queen and Princess have been very active in HOM’s events, and the House of Pacific Relations events. They along with the other Queens and Princesses of the other Houses have been very active in the community. They have volunteered on a number of community activities and causes.

In July, HOM will be hosting its annual “Pollo Asado Tardeada” for members, and guests. This is always a very enjoyable event as it includes the “Annual Salsa” contest – not the dance, the “peppers”. So begin to work on your best home made “salsa” and enter the contest. You will be advised on the date.

I am requesting your respective assistance with the various programs being planned for the year. To assist you in knowing more about the activities and events, I ask each of you to contact me via e-mail at acastro49@hotmail.com or call me at my home phone, 619-216-1103. I also encourage each of you to visit our web page at www.houseofmexico.org. Please note that you may encounter some difficulty the web site as it is being reconstructed. Information about the various activities and events will continue to be sent via e-mail. To assure that our records are correct, please forward your most current e-mail and mailing address. Since not everyone has access to a computer, I will mail a quarterly letter to each member. Also, if you have not already done so, please remember to renew your membership dues.

Many of our members and friends may not be aware of the history on the House of Mexico. It all started in 1995 when Enrique Morones, Founder of HOM, was President of the San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Vice President of Hispanic & International Marketing for the San Diego Padres. At the time he approached the Balboa Park International Cottages about possible events and to promote the wonderful cultures of Mexico. He quickly learned that there was no House of Mexico.

Enrique began to do some research and soon learned there had been a series of unsuccessful attempts to have a true and independent House of Mexico. There had been a Latin America House, and short lived attempts at a House of Mexico but nothing permanent.

Around 1997, he started to inquire about the process for getting a House of Mexico in Balboa Park and for the next few years he asked others to assist in this effort. An exploratory committee was formed and around 2001 the preparation and submittal of the required paperwork was begun.

In 2002/2003 the process for applying to the House of Pacific Relations began. HOM became a 501(c) (3), and in a close vote, HOM was accepted as a member of the House of Pacific Relations.

As the Founder of House of Mexico, Enrique was elected the House’s First President for 2004. He quickly grew HOM’s membership to over a hundred paid members, making it one of the largest Houses in terms of members in Balboa Park. HOM established regular events throughout the region, committees, including the very popular queen and princess committee. He was re-elected President for the year 2005.

Eunice Munro was elected President for the year 2006. She was followed by Arturo M Castro who was elected President for the year 2007.

I look forward to meeting each of you. Please remember that HOM’s monthly meeting is the second Monday of each month; 7:00pm; 225 Broadway, Ste 1700 (NBC Building) in downtown San Diego.

Sincerely,
Arturo M Castro
HOM President
